Meki River delta, Ziway, Ethiopia, October 2013 Maru Tona, 34, left and Roba Regasa, 53, local farmers, are chopping a garbi tree for the owner of this land who wants to grow papaya here. Between them they will take half the proceeds of the sale, the land owner taking the other half. They will earn 500 birr each for what will be a month’s work including the time it takes to dry the wood. “If the tree had been on my land I would have kept it alive – it attracts rain. Usually we just pollard the trees”, says Maru Tona.
