Blue sky view, towards French Cathedral and Konzerthaus, people dining in the shade, Gendarmenmarkt at Markgrafenstrasse, Berlin
The Gendarmenmarkt is a public square in central Berlin, with French and German Cathedrals either side of the Berlin Concert House (seen here) and a large statue of the poet Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805). The French Cathedral, also seen here, built 1701-1705 by the Huguenot Community, is the older of the two churches. The German Cathedral dates to 1708. Towers to both churches were added in 1785. The square, named after a cuirassier regiment 'Gens 'd'Armes' deployed in the square until 1735, was badly damaged in World War 2. The Konzerthaus, dating to 1821, was re-built in 1984. The German Cathedral, destroyed in 1945, was rebuilt after German re-unification in 1989 and finished in 1994.
