Ship's bell of Nansen's Fram, Oslo, Norway

Frammuseet (Fram Museum) houses the original Fram, reckoned to be the strongest wooden ship ever built; she is unquestionably the most famous ship in the history of polar exploration. In 1893–6 she carried Nansen’s expedition to a ‘Farthest North’ unbeaten by a surface vessel for over a century; in 1910–11 she took Amundsen’s expedition to Antarctica for their successful journey to the South Pole.
