The beginning of the shared space traffic engineering project in Poynton, Cheshire

The shared space traffic scheme was put into place in Poynton in December, 2011 at a cost of about £4million. There are no rules but there are subtle rules as to where there should be vehicles or pedestrians, with the using of different coloured paving materials. The scheme was controversial but it has substantially eased congestion, reduced accidents, helped pedestrians cross the road and revitalised shops.
