Theseus went to Athens to see his father in Athens. His stepmother Medeia recognized him and sought to befriend him.

In Greek mythology, Theseus is a legendary hero of Athens. He had many adventures, the best known being the slaying of the mInotaur on the island of Crete. Theseus' father Aegeus, king of Athens, had been childless, consulted the gods, and then conceived a son with the daughter of the king of Troezen. Aegeus left a sword and sandals under a rock for Theseus to get when he came of age. Theseus did so and went to Athens to see his father. His father's wife (his stepmother) was Medeia, and she recognized him and sought to befriend him (pictured in this 1917 illustration), and then planned to kill him, but Aegeus found out and banished her from Athens.
