Shortly after the Venetian Marco Polo (d. 1324) returned to Venice in 1295 from his travels in China, he took part in a naval battle or skirmish near Korcula (also spelled Curzola) between Venice and Genoa, with his ships hurling huge stones from a catapult in the bow of his vessel. The Venetians lost, and Polo was taken prisoner to Genoa, where with a fellow prisoner he wrote the renowned book on his travels.
