Placed at the very foot of theterrible Peak, in the opening of the mountain-notch upon the broad plains, every essenceof interior landscape loveliness is showeredupon it. It is without a flaw, a superlativething unpicturable to those who know only theplains or the shores of the sea; a Titaniasbower of melting sweetness amid Naturessavagest throes. Marvels are thickly There are grottoes hung with stalactites andbanked with moss-like beds of gleaming crys-tal-filaments, springs tinctured wnth iron,springs effervescent with soda, plains serriedwith huge isolated rock-sculptures, narrowgorges where at the bottom of hundreds of feetof shadow is scant passage-way, long perpen-dicular lines of white foaming torrent, andsoft blending flames of color from rosy rockand herbage and flower. The waters of the Soda Springs are walled inthe middle of a dainty park in the heart of thevillage, at night an incandescent lamp gleam-ing upward through their bubbling of gallons are exported, but somethingof the living sparkle on the tongue is lost inseparation from the surcharged fount. Here itis more exuberantly crisp and refreshing thanthat of the artificial compound which, in East-ern cities, presides over the counter dearest tothe feminine heart.
