Human culture evolved and flourished in a world with a relatively stable climate, where the average levels of C02 in the atmosphere were 350 ppm. The burning of fossil fuels have pushed the levels of C02 up to over 400 ppm. The Broch of Gurness in Orkney, on mainland island was thought to have been constructed between 100 and 200 BC. The central defensive tower or Broch is surrounded by small stone dwellings. Later Pictish houses are also to be found on the same site. The site is also believed to have been used by the vikings.
