The Maypole in the village of Barwick in Elmet. near Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK. The maypole is some 90 feet tall and is famed both for its height and for its triennial lowering at Easter and raising at Spring Bank Holiday which used to be done by the age old tradition of using ropes and ladders by the villagers. However since 2005 due to health and safety concerns, it is now taken down and re erected using a crane. On Maypole day every 3 years the village holds a gala day and the road is closed to allow the newly painted and decorated maypole to be raised after which the May Queen and her attendants make their way down the Main Street along with marching bands to nearby Hall Tower Hill where maypole dancing is performed by the local school.
