Brazil, Coffee plants damaged by frost. Today Brazil is responsible for about 1/3rd of all the coffee grown in the world. Coffee is produced in a belt roughly bounded by the tropics of cancer and capricorn, Brazil is the only heavyweight producer subject to frost. The 1975 frost was particularly bad for Brazil. There were two frosts that hit the country hard in 1994 and raised prices worldwide. The delicate tree offers an economic mainstay for dozens of countries and some 25 million people in the world. It has a monetary value surpassed only by oil. Of the two main types of tree arabicas beget better beans and about 70% of the harvest, the hardier tree the robusta accounts for the remaining 30%.
