Theycame almost immediately to Union City, where, for some years, he succeeded inacquiring a scant livelihood, contending constantly with misfortune, sicknessand death, losing in six years three children, as also his wife, who died June 1,1866. During this period, he was employed in the jewelry trade, in photograph-ing, etc., buying, in March, 1864, an interest in the office of the Union CityEagle, only a few months after it was established; but so many newspaper en-terprises having failed here, people had little
