At the age of seven-teen, in the year 1839, he enteredthe Military Academy at Westf Point. Here he was regarded as asolid, sensible young man of fair abilities, and ofsturdy, honest character. He took respectable rankas a scholar. In June, 1843, he graduated, about themiddle in his class, and was sent as lieutenant of in-fantry to one of the distant military posts in the Mis-souri Territory. Two years he past in these drearysolitudes, watching the vagabond and exasperatingIndians. The war with Mexico came. Lieut. Grant wassent with his regiment to Corpus Christi. His firstbattle was at Palo Alto. There was no chance herefor the exhibition of either skill or heroism,
