The coastal villages on Isla Grande, Chiloe, Chile, scratch out a living from fishing and traditional wooden boat-building.

Chiloe, the archipelago to the south of Chile's lake district, is a largely rural backwater. Although large scale salmon farming has brought new prosperity to its largest island, Isla Grande, the small coastal villages still scratch out a living from fishing and from building wooden boats by traditional methods. This is a fishing boat in the village of San Juan, which also has many of the wooden houses and a wooden church typical of the island.
