Oleksa was being held captive in Siberia by the Soviet Union, Stefan persuaded the Foreign Secretary, Sir Geoffrey Howe, to appeal to his Soviet counterpart, Andrei Gromyko to allow his father to be flown to London for an emotional reunion.
