Head of statue of Cosimo I de’ Medici (1519 - 1574), Grand Duke of Tuscany, sculpted in 1596 by Pietro Francavilla (1548 - 1612). The statue stands in Piazza dei Cavalieri, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy.

Pisa, Tuscany, Italy: Pietro Francavilla’s 1596 statue of Cosimo I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, stands in Piazza dei Cavalieri before the sgraffito-covered Palazzo dei Cavalieri or della Carovana a palace designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1562 as the headquarters of the Cavalieri di San Stefano, an order of knights that Cosimo founded. Cosimo (1519 - 1574), born at Castello, near Florence, was the second Duke of Florence (1537 - 1574) and first Grand Duke of Tuscany (1569 - 1574). He was the great-great-grandson of Lorenzo the Elder, the son of Giovanni di Bicci and brother of Cosimo the Elder. He was thus a member of a branch of the Medici family that had taken an active part in Medici affairs but had played no political role. Nevertheless, when he heard of the assassination of his distant cousin, Alessandro, Duke of Florence, he immediately made for Florence. There, in January 1537, Cosimo was elected head of the republic.
