Paviland Cliff, The Gower, South Wales. Part of limestone coastal reserves running from Rhossili to Port Eynon. Location of Goats Hole Cave.

Paviland Cliff & Foxhole Slade, Part of limestone coastal reserves running from Rhossili to Port Eynon. Foxhole Slade is a narrow valley running down to sea between limestone cliffs. Goat’s Hole Cave is hidden in sea cliff: access is generally difficult & we could not get to cave because of high tide. William Buckland found the skeleton of a Cro-Magnon man (aged 25-30, 5’ 8", 73kg, 11 stone) in cave in 1823. It was strongly impregnated with iron oxide so nicknamed ‘Red Lady of Paviland’ before physical gender had been established. Circa 26,000 years old, the body was found in extended burial position along cave wall with remains of large herbivores, stone slabs at feet & top of body, head missing, and evidence of the use of ochre.
