It is ground in upon him at every turn thatthe city is a place for business, not sentiment. Wife andchildren and kindred may be with him, but their being inthe city is only a temporary arrangement. The roof over-head is a camping place where they rest for a night, or amonth, or a year, but not for an indefinite period. Thehome is off somewhere in the country — up the river,along the Sound, over in New Jersey — rather than in thecity. Even those who have no place in the country moveabout so often, from one
