Wasting of the muscles of the hand in a 77 year old female patient due to carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome results from pressure on a nerve which passes into the hand via a gap (the carpal tunnel); impulses from the blocked nerve cause numbness, muscle weakness, and pain in the fingers. It may occur in arthritis or be a repetitive strain injury (RSI).
