Red and yellow fruits of white bryony, Bryonia dioica, arranged on a tendril that has spirally- coiled around the branch of a young tree. The tendril of white bryony is spirally-coiled when young but straightens out as it begins to grow. The apical (growing end) part of the tendril is sensitive & if it comes into contact with a solid body (especially one with a roughened surface) it bends towards the stimulus. This results in repeated stimulation & bending and the tendril thus encoils its support.
