The iron picketed gateway, through which the mar-ble sarcophagi may be seen, is flanked by two brick pilas- 344 MOUNT VERNON ters, saruiouuted by a stone coping, wliicli covers a gotliicarch. Over this arch is a white marble tablet inscribed— WITHIN THIS ENCLOSURE KEST THE EEMAINS OFGENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON.
