The race was over a distance of twomiles and was won by Monette 2:14J with West in thesulky. A Promising Young Trainer. Among the young trainers and drivers of Californiawho have been successful as trainers and drivers dur-ing the past two years is William G. Durfee, son of theveteran C. A. Durfee. Last season was his secondseason in the sulky and his record was a good one*He started horses in 55 races, was 11 times first, 13. times second, 9 times third and 10 times fourth, whichis certainly a good showing for a young trainer. Hisprincipal winners were Charley Mac 2:174, Osito 2:134and Maggie McKinney 2:17, all by his fathers stallionMcKinney 2:11}. Mr. Durfee is located at Los Angelesand will be out again this year with a string of trottersamong which will be several young McKinneys. has a cool head and brings his horses to thepost in good condition to try for the money and gen-erally gets his share of it. His horse Charley Macwas one of the best green horses out last year, and willtrot much below his present record this season. News From the North. !
