Mr. Hartman, whose appointment is effective April 1, succeeds Robert F. Smith who retired in January. The department's irrigation secre- tariat, located in Lethbridge, provides staff Gerhardt Hartman support to the Irrigation Council. The council, which reports to the minister of agriculture, is responsible for effecting a sound irrigation policy, and for administering Alberta's Irrigation Act and any agreements between the pro- vince and the irrigation districts.
