Megacolon resection in ischaemic colitis. Surgeons resecting (removing) a patient's colon (large intestine, centre) that has become enlarged and dilated (megacolon) due to ischaemic colitis. Ischaemic colitis is the inflammation and injury of the large intestine as a result of inadequate blood supply. Here, Covidien Ligasure mechanical cutters are being used to divide the colonic mesentery (mesocolon) before resection. The mesentery is a fold of tissue on the wall of the peritoneal cavity. It attaches to the intestines and contains the arteries and veins that supply the intestine.
