Richard the Lionheart , king of England from 1189 until his death, was a prime leader of the Third Crusade, or KIngs' Crusade.


Richard the Lionheart (1157-1199) was king of England from 1189 until his death. He was the principal commander of the Third Crusade, which is also known as the Kings' Crusade (1189-1192) and scored many victories over the Muslim armies, headed by Saladin. The Third Crusade did not accomplish its ultimate goal, the reconquest of Jerusalem. This 1902 illustration shows Richard the Lionheart leading Crusaders into the Holy Land.
