Hokkeji Temple Garden is next door to Kaminomiya at Suwa Taisha Shrine with an impressive pond garden. There are satsuki azaleas planted on the slope that accentuates the small pond garden. Although the founding of the temple is unknown, it opened as a Tendai sect temple during the Kamakura Period, then later became a Rinzai sect temple. After that, Suwa Taisha was burned by the Oda clan during the Warring States period when Nobunaga made Hokke-ji his temple. At the time there were many other temples in the area but only Hokkeji remains.Â
