In May, 1399, Richard crossed to Ireland, a countrywhich to his credit he tried to rule well. We have apleasant picture of him, now a man of thirty-three, saying farewell at Windsor to the childof ten to whom he was married, lifting lierin his arms and kissing her again and absence opened the door to his foes. He had alreadybanished Henry, Earl of Derby, John of Gaunts son and Henry, son ofJohn of Gaunt,overthrowsBichard, heir, and on the old dukes death in 1399 he refusedto permit the vast estates of the dukedom to pass to theirnew owner.
