The leads to the engines are 14 in. in diameter and (exceptingthe one for the engine opposite the stack) are carried down to thbboiler-room basement, and thence through the wall (with a bend of6 ft. radius) to connect with i6-in. Straight Line separators, madeby the Direct Separator Co., of Syracuse, N. Y., into which thehigh-pressure piping drains. In each case the separator is set atthe edge of the engine foundation, and supported on helical springsto take up expansion of piping and vibration. From the top ofthe separator a 14-in. pipe leads to the high-pressure cylinder,following the general contour of the engine frame. The steambeing superheated, there is no water discharged from the separator about 26 ft. and this flywheel has the equivalent mass of 308,000lb., acting at the
