His grandfather,Edward Gobin, was a soldier in the War of John P. S. Gobin received an academic edu-cation, learned the art of printing, and was admittedto the Northumberland County bar in 1858. Whenthe Civil War threatened, before the firing uponSumter, he tendered his services to Governor Curtin,was accepted, and on returning to Sunbur^^ com-menced the organization of what eventually was Com-pau}^ F, Eleventh Pennsylvani
