On the paternal side he descendedfrom good old Revolutionary stock, his great-grand-father, Charles Gobin, being Captain in one of theBerks County Associated Battalions during thestruggle for Independence, serving in the JerseyCampaign, and in the summer of 1780 on active dutyon the frontiers of Pennsylvania. His grandfather,Edward Gobin, was a soldier in the War of John P. S. Gobin received an academic edu-cation, learned the art of printing, and was admittedto the Northumberland County bar in 1858.
