He then returned to Woodstock to occupythe chair of theology, left vacant by the elevation ofthe famous Father Mazzella to the rank of 1888 he again returned to the College of the HolyCross, as professor of philosophy, and in January, 1891,he was appointed president of Boston College to succeedthe Rev. Robert Fulton, S. J. The past two years ofthe Rev. Father Devitts life have been so closely con-nected with BostonCollege that it seemsonly fitting to say aword of that famousinstitution. The schoolopened with aboutforty pupils, but soonbegan to grow. Dur-ing the administra-tion of the Fulton, whowas appointed to thepresidency in 1870,the growth was veryrapid, and in 1877the first class wasgraduated. Everyyear has marked alarge increase in thenumber of ■\t present there arethree hundred andsixty in actual attend-ance. This is anincrease of fifty over last year. Ihe institution standsin the first rank among Catholic colleges. Nearly allthe younger clergymen of the archdiocese of Bostonare graduates of this college, and many of its alumnioccupy prominent positions in professional and politicallife. Father Devitt has successfully devoted himself tothe maintenance of the old standard in the study
