Karain prehistoric cave with rock engravings, Yagca Koyu, Dosemealti, Turkey


Karain, still under excavation, is one of the most important sites, continously inhabited for some 25,000 years through to the Classical era, with earlier evidence of occupation from pre-Neanderthal dating back more than 600,000 years. Seen here is an apparent 'face' sculpted into the natural contours of the cave ceiling next to a red ochre painted icon from a later era
