The Confederates had destroyed all other aids to navigation along the coast, but it was of the utmost im-portance that vessels with cargoes for Wilmington should be able to make port and discharge their precious ballast in the formof munitions of war. In the view of the bomb-proof at the bottom of the page is evident the pains that have been taken to makethe works impregnable.
