Berlin, Kopenick. Hauptmann von Kopenick. Traditional old pub in Oberspreestrasse. Exterior view History: The Hauptmann Von Köpenick is remembered by a plaque and a bronze statue at the entrance of the Town Hall. In 1906 a 57 year old unemployed cobbler, Wilhelm Voigt, bought a captain’s uniform at a flea market. He convinced some soldiers that he was a real captain and they went to the town hall to arrest the Mayor of Köpenick, Dr. Georg Langerhans and sent him to to the Neue Wache guardhouse in Berlin. He demanded 3,557 marks from the city coffers in return for a receipt. He was caught and sentenced 10 days later. The hoax was the inspiration for Carl Zuckermeyer’s comedy ‘The Captain of Köpenick’.
