The funeral of Cardinal Karl Lehmann was held in the Mainz Cathedral, following a funeral procession from the Augustiner church were he was lying in repose. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier attended the funeral as representative of the German state. Cardinal Karl Lehmann was the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mainz for 33 years until his retirement in 2016. He was also the chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Germany for 21 years until he stepped down from this position in 2008.
