They advise careful adjustment of the platinum anode so asto secure the , and their apparatus insures constancy ofaction for a considerable period of time by the following simpledevice : the projecting platinum P (Fig. 29) rests at its point upona plate of mica, and as the point wears away the platinum slipsfurther down by its own weight, and so preserves the originallength of the exposed portion. * Archives cVElcctricite Midicale,April, Fig. 29. on Al/^i^taxi>Stjpplt Asso E is a wame suspended from the cove/ A, Theanode, terminates at P,*ana is enclosed in a sheath, except at its^^ten^i^,r-,whii^^esJi«^on the platebelow. CHAPTER V THE SECONDARY BATTERY ORACCUMULATOR Structure of an accumulator—Charging from a dynamo—From the directcurrent mains—From the alternating mains—Rectifiers—The aluminiumvalve. Construction of Accumulators.—An accumulator is a vesselcontaining two sets of lead plates, called the positive and negativeplates, and a solution of sulphuric acid of the strength of onepart of acid to five or six of set of plates has a screw connec-tion or terminal for the attachment ofwires. In the smaller forms there areusually three plates, one positive andtwo negative, but there may be five, seven, eleven or more plates in eachcell. Each cell is complete in itself, but for convenience it is usual toarrange four or six cells side by side inone receptacle
