Illustration from Theatrum Machinarum Novum 1661 by Georg Andreas Böckler; A water powered saw; An intricate set of gears, cogs, wheels and cranks, all set underground moves the saw vertical up and down. The whole is powered by a water wheel in a stream or leat. At the same time a ratchet device also powered by the water wheel automatically moves the carriage holding the wood to be sawn horizontally. The workmen are loading a new log to be sawn onto the table. A Heath Robison approach and one that in practice probably would not have worked.
