The city received itsnew name (Neo7roAis = iVa6!«fos) from Vespasian,and on coins still extant (Eckhel, Boctr. Nximm. iii!433) is called Flavia Neapolis. It had been laidwaste, in all probability, during the Jewish war;and the overthrow had been so complete that, con-trary to what is genei-ally true in such instances,of the substitution of a foreign name for the nativeone,_ the original appellation of Shechem neverregained its currency among the people of thecountry.
