Original castle built in 1420 to help in the collection of taxes and excise from shipping sailing through the Øresund, which were introduced in 1429. The present castle was built 1574 to 1585 in Renaissance architectural style by Dutch architects Hans van Pæschen and Antonine van Opbergen. Shakespeare set his play Hamlet in the castle at Elsinore.
