Lilac flower bud. Light micrograph of a section through a flower bud from a lilac (Syringa vulgaris) tree. The outer layer of the bud consists of eight thick scale leaves (bract, blue-green). Under this are the inner four small foliage leaves (blue-green). In the middle of the bud, the flower is wrapped by a petal and anthers with pollen sacs (brown). The ovules can also be seen (blue). The stems of the bud have vascular bundles (blue and violet). Magnification: x4, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
