HMS Edinburgh is the last of 14 Type 42 destroyers which have been in service with the Royal Navy since 1975, they have been the most combat proven warship in service with the RN since the end of the Second World War with two of there number lost during the Falklands War of 1982 (HM Ships Sheffield and Coventry). On Friday the 31st May 2013 Edinburgh will enter Portsmouth for the final time bringing to an end the time of the Type 42 in the Royal Navy the final act will be when her decommissioning ceremony will be held on the 6th June 2013. The Type 42 has been replaced in the Royal Navy by six Type 45 destroyers.
