The fort is also known as the Kingston Redoubt as was built in 1857 as a defence against invasion. Parts of the fort has fallen into ruin with parts of the fort now gone. However there is an active group of volunteers with the intent to keep what is left maintained. Incorporated into the design is a Carnot Wall - Shoreham Fort is said to be the last fort to have a Carnot wall.
