The articular ends of thebones are then exposed and removed with a metacarpalsaw or with bone-forceps (Fig. 456). In excising theinterphalangeal joints, the incision is usually made uponthe side of the joint, and when the articular surfaces ofthe bone have been exposed they are removed with a smallsaw or forceps. Excision of the Clavicle.—The clavicle is excised bymaking an incision over the bone from one articulation tothe other, which is carried directlv down to the bone ; the. RESECTION OF THE BIBS. 545 periosteum is then separated, and the shaft of the bone maybe divided at the middle and each fragment raised anddisarticulated ; or the bone may be disarticulated at oneextremity, then raised up and freed from its adherenttissues, and disarticulated at the other extremity. Indisarticulating the sternal articulation of the clavicle(Fig. 457), a probe-pointed knife should be used, andgreat care should be exercised to avoid injury of theimportant vessels and nerves which lie in close proximityto it. Resection of the Ribs.—In this operation the incision should correspond in lengthFig. 455. and direction with the por- tion of bone to be removed, and may be crossed at each Fig. 456.
