Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of intestinal villi with capillariies. Villi are finger-like projections from the inner lining of the small intestine that serve to increase the surface area available for absorption of nutrients from food. Each villus has an outer layer surrounding blood vessels that carry the nutrients into the bloodstream.
