Mechanical appliances, mechanical movements and novelties of construction; a complete work and a continuation, as a second volume, of the author's book entitled "Mechanical movements, powers and devices" ... including an explanatory chapter on the leading conceptions of perpetual motion existing during the past three centuries. ill always bearfairly against the rollers and maintain rolling contact therewith duringthe whole of the time each roller is in gear, and by turning the screwin either direction the wheel will rotate. 601. SWASH-PLATE GEARS. The two gears A and B inappearance are two elhptical gears working under the impossible condition of fixed center distances with theirmajor and minor axes coinciding. Thesegears rotate at the same velocity ratio, andB drives a third spur gear, C, having flangedsides. The gear C is not only rotated but isreciprocated back and forth along its bearing, engaging the sides of its driving gear. It is,of course, obvious that the elliptical gearsare in reality swash plates or spur gears, formed as a diagonal slice from a spur gearhaving a length equal to the elliptical sectionprojected on its axis. It will be observed that the teeth are cut parallelwith the shafts and all are the same distance from their respective cen-ters, so that the paradox is one of appearance only. 233. 234 GEARING AND GEAR MOTION, ETC.
