THE REOPENING OF THE PORT OF VENICE, ITALY, MAY 1945 - After extensive sweeping, not yet completed, of main channels leading to the port of Venice, a large number of mines have been removed, making it possible to admit ships to the port. The opening of the port will ease the long supply line to troops in Austria and will hasten supplies for local civilians. Whilst the port suffered from Allied bombing, the damage was not sufficient to cause great difficulty in bringing the docks back into work. The timely intervention of Partisans prevented the Germans from carrying out extensive demolitions.
