Budding of a yeast cell, illustration

Illustration of a yeast (Ascomycota) cell budding in three stages. The first step (top) depicts a small outgrowth on the surface of the cell. In the second step (middle), this outgrowth has grown larger and more prominent. These outgrowths are daughter yeast cells forming through a budding process from the larger parent cell. Budding is a form of asexual reproduction, where a new cell is created through an outgrowth that detaches from the parent body. The final step (bottom) in this process shows this detachment taking place.
