It is hardly conceivable that these imposing earthworks were meantfor mere out-door occupation. A people capable of erecting fortifica-tions which could not be much improved upon by modern militaryscience, as to position, and, considering the material used, the methodof construction ; and who could combine for religious observances en-closures in groups of elaborate design, extending for more than twentymiles, would probably crown such works with structures in h
