Honeybee brain research. Researcher using calcium imaging to analyse the brain activity of a honeybee (Apis mellifera). The honeybee's brain has fewer than one million nerve cells and is used as a model system for research into behaviours like those associated with learning and memory. Researchers use the bee's ability to learn and remember odours to study the underlying neural mechanisms of learning and memory. Photographed at the Centre de Recherche sur la Cognition Animale (CRCA), Toulouse, France.
