Guanajuato, capital of the Mexican state of Guanajuato, was founded in 1554 in the the richest silver mining area of Mexico. City reputed for its fine colonial Spanish architecture, it has been desiganted a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name Guanajuato is derived from the Tarascan Indian words 'quanax juato", meaning 'place of frogs'.
