BANKING taking up the history of the financial in-stitutions of Schuyler County, we find that thebanking business was closely allied to the mer-cantile trade in the early days, and that therewas a gradual evolution to the conditions andsystems of the splendid service of the presentday. Prior to 1840 there was practically nomoney in circulation in the county and businesswas done almost entirely by barter and the development of the agricultural re-sources of the county the mercantile business.
