Bistoury cache. This is a French term meaning hidden knife . This English instrument, from around 1810, is a silver surgical knife with a pointed blade (not seen) and plunger action. It was inserted into the body with blade concealed (as seen here). When in the correct position, the blade could be deployed from the tip using the plunger, and used to cut tissue or open cavities.
